Lump loot on Lerena in Kimberley

TREVOR REID: TRAINER Clinton Binda’s runners normally do well at Flamingo Park and his entry, Leap In The Del, could take the Kimberley Nursery, Race 7 over 1400m at the Kimberley track on Monday.

Title-chasing jockey Gavin Lerena will have a tough job to get Leap In The Del over from a wide gate but the gelding has early gate speed.

A winner of only one race in seven starts, Leap In The Del is not a “good thing’’ but his only run at this track resulted in an easy win.

Gelded after a disappointing seventh, 10.25 lengths behind top juvenile Softly Falling Rain, he has battled to regain his best form, but Leap In The Del did appreciate the removal of the blinkers last time and finished sixth, 5.25 lengths behind Desert Sheik.

Unbeaten Space Girl has looked good in both her starts and jumps from a good draw at No 3, so should fight out the finish. Drawing wide on both occasions proved no hindrance to Space Girl and she will be the horse to catch.

Trainer Corne Spies has six of the 15 runners and if jockey bookings are a guide, then Oh So Var with Francois Naude up could be the stable choice. Oh So Var has 5.25 lengths to find on Space Girl on previous form and is only 2kg better off.

Stable companions Defender Of Peace and Five Rings are still winless but will not be long in exiting the maiden ranks and are not out of it if they enjoy Flamingo Park.

Atlas Grove and Giant Strides are two others who are capable of showing improvement.
